madrid airport plane crash

i have tried to keep this blog light and funny to share my experience in europe with you - in a way, it makes me feel like you're here with me too - but i have been very affected by the madrid tragedy and wanted to share my feelings with you.

more than 150 people died yesterday when a spanair plane took off from madrid's main airport - the airport i have used several times - as it headed for the canary islands. i flew spanair from frankfurt to madrid last tuesday.

this hits so close to home because i know that those 153 people were headed to the canary islands to vacation, relax and enjoy themselves. and that's what i came here to do too.

but it doesn't make me think that the takeaway is that we should not fly. or drive or bike ride for that matter. i think the takeaway is that this is another example of how precarious our lives are, and how precious they are. and that as a result, we owe it to ourselves to appreciate every single day we are alive. and that includes traveling to beautiful places and exploring and learning and growing.

i often need reminders to not sweat the small stuff. most often, they serve to minimize the stress in my life. today, this tragedy reminds me to say whatever if i have to wait 20 minutes for a spaniard to get back to their job, or spend another $200 on a stupid hotel room because all the others are full. because i am lucky enough to continue enjoying my life. and i think this is an important lesson for us all.

on that note, i am getting off the couch to check out some gaudi architecture near the sagrada familia.

love you all.
